Christmas Blow-Out Deals for Weddings?

Sure! Don't think that post-Christmas shopping is only for sweaters, wrapping paper and candy canes... For you creative types, check clearance shelves for fun guest favors, ribbon, lights, platters (that you can spray paint over - any color you'll need), candles, candy, fabric, seasonal table decor items, ornaments (if you have a holiday 2009 wedding planned), and more.

Also, keep in mind that boutiques and bridal shops may want to get inventory out the door before the 1st of the year as well. Might be a nice time to get a flower girl dress or your wedding gown - a deal off the rack!

Recession Weddings

Happy Monday Everyone!

So obviously you've been hearing the economic buzz about the US being in a recession. Does this affect the wedding industry and the amount of people planning to get married?

One wedding report that we receive says that the number of people saying "I do" will decrease in 2009, but only slightly. No matter what is going on in the world or the economy, weddings will never cease!

Because of this recession economy, you might be able to find some wedding vendor deals depending on where you live. In some areas, people are looking for ways to earn a 2nd income. What may have been a hobby for people (catering, musician, photography, DJ'ing, baking, sewing, decorating) or a once-in-a-while gig, may now become new vendors in the wedding industry. This could be good for you and your wedding budget!

Also, people may be more willing to barter for services at this time. Do you offer a service or product that you could trade for your desired wedding services? Keep that in mind, you never know what someone else is in need of.

Good luck deal hunters! Brought to you by http://www.nwweddingplace.com/

Economy Woes Got Your Wedding Budget Down?

Yep. Money is tight for many people right now. However... weddings must go on! Here's the good news - You can still have a great wedding even though prices are up! If money's in a crunch, that just means you need to be a little more creative, that's all.

Could you make this free idea work at your event? *Wedding Dessert Bar*
Ask 12 friends of the family to bring a dessert plate (of whatever they'd like or assign them an item) to the reception on a plate that matches your decor (black, white, ivory, red, silver, whatever). Ask them to bring enough of their item for approx. 25-30 people. Bite sized would be even better and go even farther! 12 people X 25 cookies/brownies/tarts/etc. each should feed about 100 guests comfortably. If 12 people brought 40 bite sized items, that could potentially feed about 135.
Next, set up a long table, decorate it up and leave blank spots for platters & plates. As these people arrive, they can fill in the blank spots with their desserts. Once you add wedding cake to the mix, people will be loving this reception! So will you, since you only spent $$ on your cake!
You could also alter this idea to make it be donated hors d'oeuvres instead!

Go save some money... :-)

Wondering how to set up this wedding reception decor feature?
Here goes: (see one of our previous posts for the complete supplies list)
Step 1. Get your 8" round table and place each leg on top of your 4, very sturdy wooden boxes/cement blocks (or similar). Don't worry - no one will see these!!
Step 2. Place a table cloth on your round table, then place your sturdy boxes on top - right in the middle of the round table.
Step 3. Put another table cloth over the boxes. It will be too big, but strategically drape it and make the extra fabric mound up here and there.
Step 4. Use tulle fabric here and there to cascade down off the top boxes. Let it mound up here and there too.
Step 5. Do the same with your Christmas light strands. Make sure you have a power strip underneath the table, or hidden underneath a cloth.
Step 6. Place sand, and then candles in your glass candle holders/containers. Next, place them on top of the top boxes, and also on the main round table randomly. Use at least one large one on the very top, but 3 would be better. Mix up the sizes next to each other in other areas.
Step 7. Get out your 4, 6' or 8' rectangular tables and create a large square around what you've made so far. Be sure to get the tables as close as possible to each other and to the round table.
Step 8. Put table cloths on the rectangular tables, and pull some of the tulle from the middle onto them in a few places so it all looks connected.
Step 9. Place glass rocks, tea lights and some smaller votive holders, etc. on the rectangular tables. Light all the candles just before guests arrive. Keep the candle flames away from fabric!
Step 10. Bring on the food!
Step 11. Enjoy and take a picture!
For added impact, bring some tulle down from the ceiling if possible, or hang a chandelier right above this feature. If you have spare flowers, place them randomly on the tables as well.
Have fun!

Huge Wedding Decor Impact, Small Cost

Hello my wedding bargain buddies!
Last Friday, I helped assemble reception decor for a large wedding. In fact, there were so many guests that a huge tent had to be rented! Tents are fun, but the scale of them is sometimes daunting for appropriately sized decorations. Big space, requires big decor.

Check out this picture:
To achieve this look, you will need the following items:

  • A round table
  • 4, 6" rectangular tables
  • 4, sturdy wood blocks, cinder blocks, or similar
  • 2 bolts of tulle fabric
  • 10 table cloths (or 6 table cloths and other fabric)
  • A couple sturdy boxes
  • 16-20 glass candle holders of various shapes/sizes
  • Tealights, votives & pillar candles
  • 6 strands of white Christmas lights
  • Sand
  • Food!

Stay tuned for our assembly instructions for this massive wedding reception decor feature!

Dollar Store Wedding Decor

TGIF Readers!

Have you checked out the dollar stores lately? I did last week, and found several items that I can use for an upcoming wedding I'm assisting with.
One, very cheap wedding table decor idea (that we're using for this particular wedding) uses shallow glass bowls or shaped glass vases (must be shallow), fresh flowers to match the wedding floral theme (lilies), clear glass rocks or marbles, tea lights, and votive candles. In keeping with a simple, elegant and sparkly environment we are trying to create, our reception table set-up will be a snap! We'll fill the shallow bowls/vases partially with water. Next, we will insert ONE lily that will drape over the side. Surrounding the vase, several votives and tea lights will be lit. Adding even more sparkle, will be the clear glass rocks spread out randomly around the vase and candles.
Lovely, cheap and simple wedding reception table decor! Browse the dollar store in your area and see what you can find to save wedding budget money. For more brilliant ideas... please visit our main table decor article HERE!

More Cheap Wedding Cake Ideas

OK - I have another great idea for getting a good wedding cake deal. It's simple, yet effective! It will work especially well if you want a simple cake, and you already have your cake topper or will be using fresh flowers as decor/topper.
Ready?

Buy pieces of the cake (the tiers) separately. Call a bakery or grocery store bakery and DO NOT say you want a wedding cake. The minute the words "wedding cake" come out of your mouth... there is an instant markup - cha-ching$$. Ask to purchase plain white or ivory frosted, round or square cakes and see what happens. Hey, for all they know, you could be a PTA mom buying cakes for the school's cake walk!

It's so easy to put your own ribbon around each tier and to place your own topper on the cake!! Anyone with an artistic eye can easily place some fresh flowers around it too, and create a lovely floral topper. Try this tip, and see how it works for you. Good luck!

Need a Cheap Wedding Cake?

Hello friends,

Just wanted to tell you about a great wedding cake deal. This weekend, I was the matron of honor in a wedding.

I don't have pictures of the cake yet, but it was lovely! It was a 3-tiered cake, with white and red frosting that served 100 guests. When I asked the bride where she got it and how much it cost, I was very surprised. She paid $115 for the cake at WalMart! It came with everything necessary to set it up, including a take-home box to save the top tier, decorative silk ivy and the tier set up pieces. WOW - what a deal. She purchased her cake topper from www.NWweddingplace.com, which was from the coastal mist wedding collection.

If you're looking for a cheap wedding cake, consider your local WalMart if it has a bakery dept. That deal is hard to beat...

Money Saving Wedding Reception Decor & Guest Favor Idea

Hello bargain hunters...

We have a fun idea for your wedding reception. Have you been wondering what to give guests as a wedding favor? Are you still trying to decide on either an aisle runner idea or reception table decor ideas? What about this...

Buy individual sized potted flowers or plants. For an outdoor wedding (or indoor even), these would make an excellent aisle runner! Beautiful flower annuals would also make lovely wedding reception table decor as well. Think of the color splash they would provide.
Once you've put them to use in your decor, give them away to guests as they leave! Wedding decor, and wedding guest favors all in one. Very budget friendly! Not to mention eco-friendly as well...
Good luck! For more money saving tips and budgeting ideas, visit www.NWweddingplace.com!

Cheapest Wedding Venues

Hello wedding bargain hunters! Are you wondering what the cheapest wedding venues are? In general, we've found these places to be the most affordable venues for weddings:

  • Local community centers
  • A church that you're a member of/attend
  • A public park or garden
  • A friend or family member's yard/property
  • Beaches
  • Your local courthouse
Some of these may have a cost that's actually "free", although all will have costs associated with them one way or another. Each one has advantages and disadvantages, but it all comes down to what you want! After all, it's your wedding...

Wedding Planning Expenses Help

This post is a follow-up from our previous post (please read that one first :-). So, how can you save money on the "planning expense" of your wedding?

Do as much as you can via the web, phone and e-mail.

There is a wealth of information on the web and pictures to help you plan. If you find the perfect bouquet photo, e-mail it to your florist instead of driving it over! If you're renting items, ask your rental company for their website address so you can check out pictures that way. Ask for pictures of a vendor's work via e-mail or web. Most reputable companies now have websites.

As far as your time goes, there are two viewpoints to consider while trying to minimize your time as an 'expense'.

1. Have a shorter engagement so your planning doesn't seem to drag on endlessly. Although, that means a more intense, yet shorter planning period.
2. Use a longer engagement to spread out planning tasks. However, be cautious. The temptation is greater with a long engagement to plan, change, re-plan, change it up again, obsess, and become Bridezilla! Discipline yourself to have short flurries of planning task time periods.

We offer a free wedding budget tracker form for download on this page www.NWweddingplace.com/timeormoney-weddingplanning-article.htm at the bottom of the article text. This article will also help you decide whether you should hire wedding planner help or not.

Bet You Didn't Know About This Wedding Expense...

So you're keeping track of your wedding budget. Flowers - $450. Venue - $800. Wedding Dress - $599. Groom's Tux - $99. Etc., etc. There is another wedding expense that you're probably not even aware of. It's called "Planning Expenses". What am I talking about? Here goes:

1. GAS. Getting to boutiques, checking out venues, interviewing vendors, picking out colors, etc., is costing you money. Who knows how much you've spent so far in gas!!

2. Shipping. Although you can get some great deals via the web for wedding items (and will save you gas $), don't exclude shipping costs when you're calculating your expenditures.

3. Planning Tools. Books, magazines, trackers, and other planning services & items, are an upfront expense. However, these tools may actually save you some money in the long run!

4. Time! Your time is valuable. Some people are of the opinion that time is money. Not sure I share that view completely, yet it is something you should take into consideration.

In our next post, we will investigate a few ways to make your planning process more efficient and reduce the costs associated with it. Come back later this week!!

Recession-Proofing Your Wedding Budget -Part 2

Brides & grooms often spend $ on "Optional Wedding Service Categories". Which categories are optional? Which are not? In our opinion, the following categories of wedding vendors/services are NOT optional, and even the most basic wedding has them:
  • Formalwear (of some sort)
  • Officiant
  • Photography (to some degree)
  • Rings
  • Floral (to some degree)
  • Cake or desserts
  • Invitations
  • Venue (can be a free one)

Here are the categories that we feel are completely optional, or could be used at their most basic level for serious money savings:

  • Limos & Transportation
  • Health (gyms, personal trainers, yoga, dance lessons, etc)
  • Wedding planners/coordinators
  • Printed materials
  • Catering
  • Videography
  • Music services

Let's take catering as an example. Do you really need a full catered meal? Could you DIY your own catering and have snacks and hors d'oeuvres instead to go with your cake? The price difference between those 2 food options is staggering. Or videography for example too - Have a friend videotape your ceremony and sections of your reception! The $$ savings there too would be immense. Even so, maybe some of these items are not optional according to you! Take into consideration all the options you have in each category. Nearly every category has a DIY option, a basic option and a full service option. Ultimately, it's your wedding so decide the budget priorities for yourselves.

Fundraising For Wedding Money

I've known some pretty savvy, creative engaged couples looking for ways to pay for their weddings. Typically, people work overtime at work, restrict themselves from any unneccesary spending, sell a car, or something similar. I know one entreprenureal groom who set himself up as a car detailer and solicited friends and aquaintances for detailing jobs. He got some! Several couples I know have held garage or yard sales to raise some much needed cash. Another couple even had a car wash!

If you find yourself over budget and under funded, these are all great money making ideas! Decide for yourselves how badly you'd like to (or need to) pad your wedding budget account and go get some creativity flowing. You could work extra hours, sell an unneccesary asset or extra stuff, somehow use publicity or advertising to trade for free services, use skills or talents to earn extra $$.
CHA-CHING :-)

Got any ideas? Please share...

Can you Recession-Proof your wedding?

All the economic buzz these days talks of recession. However, we know that weddings will never cease no matter what the economy does... :-)

Which wedding services are most effected by recession price increases and soaring fuel costs?
Catering/food, jewelry and transportation services are obvious categories seeing price increases lately. Slight increases may happen as well in some cases for gowns, flowers, DJ's, and officiant services all due to the increased costs of shipping and transporting these items/services. Categories that are relatively uneffected by recession are photography, tuxes, wedding planners, rental services (unless they are delivering), beauty, pre-marriage counseling, invitations & printing, and venues. Whether or not these items will see price increases "just because..." remains to be seen!

Stay tuned for more recession-proofing wedding ideas.

How to Save Money on Your Wedding!

Saving money makes me happy. Plain and simple. It's almost an art form in some ways... :-)!

How can couples have a great wedding, yet not break the bank? Here are the top 3 ways:

1. Do more searching, planning and DIY projects yourselves. In general, this is the number 1 way to save money on your wedding. Now you're probably thinking, "I am planning my wedding myself, so what is she talking about?" When I say do more planning yourselves, here is an example: If you walk into a florist and say you need a wedding flower package, you may hear a "cha-ching" sound in the background. Shop around. Know what you want and don't get sucked into extras. Or, look at grocery store floral departments for pre-made arrangements. Buy store flower bunches and put them in vases on your reception tables instead. Silk flowers can also be stunning and created far in advance. Get creative and don't just totally pawn things off to your vendors! "Our wedding colors are green and pink, and we need 6 bouquets, 12 arrangements, etc.... so make it happen". That's a recipe for overpaying.
2. Know what you're willing to spend money on, and what categories are "skimp-able". If you have a budget, which nearly all weddings do, you'll need to creatively fit everything in. Want a fancy wedding gown? Don't care so much about the invitations? Need a great DJ for the reception? Not sure about what kind of food or desserts to have? Take everything into consideration and figure out your priorities - rank them. Make sure to consult your groom :-)
3. Do some DIY projects. DIY stands for do-it-yourself. You can save some serious $$ this way, although I must tell you it won't save time. If you're not handy, I bet you know someone who is! Maybe a willing friend or family member?
